Football Team Loses to Penn State in an Un-Happy Valley Performance
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Purdue Boilermakers fell to Penn State 31-17 on Saturday night, as a stifling Nittany Lion defense and a dominant ground attack kept Purdue from building momentum in a tough Big Ten matchup.
Despite a few key playmaking sparks on special teams and downfield passes, Purdue was unable to overcome severe offensive lulls and a heavy disparity in possession time.
Key Game Moments
- Early Fireworks: Purdue opened scoring highlights in the first quarter when quarterback Ryan Browne unleashed a deep pass that receiver Xavier Townsend hauled in—fighting through pass interference—to secure an improbable touchdown catch.
- Special Teams Spark: Trailing 14-7 in the second quarter, Purdue’s special teams unit made a game-altering play. Bisi Owens blocked a Penn State punt, allowing Jalil Hall to scoop up the football and return it 31 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14.
- Ground Attack Breakdown: Penn State controlled the pace through the rushing game, racking up 269 total yards on the ground—led by Cam Wallace’s 135-yard, one-touchdown performance.
- Time of Possession Disparity: The Nittany Lions held onto the ball for 43 minutes and 27 seconds, leaving the Boilermakers’ offense on the sideline for the majority of the night (holding the ball for just 16:33).

Offense Struggles to Find Rhythm
Outside of the touchdown connection to Townsend, Head Coach Barry Odom’s squad found little traction against the Nittany Lions’ front seven. Purdue was held to just 33 rushing yards on 15 carries and managed only nine total first downs throughout the game.
Freshman kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano provided a late highlight, converting a 49-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but the Boilermakers were unable to generate another late-game drive to bridge the gap.
